Recently, lots of celebrities are using their power and influence for the better. They are inspiring their fans by encouraging them to love themselves and the skin they are in. Many celebrities are shedding new light on this topic, giving it the attention it deserves.
Pink, Selena Gomez, Tess Holliday, Lady Gaga, and Kelly Clarkson, just to name a few, are standing up against “body-shamers.” Handled with class and wisdom, these women have silenced their critics by redirecting the negative comments to focus on what truly matters. Women all over the world are being inspired by these celebrities and the powerful statements they are making.
“I’m proud …to be a voice for girls and say, ‘You don’t need to look like everybody else. Love who you are.” – Lea Michele
“I think no matter what you look like, the key is to first of all be happy with yourself. And then you know if you want to try to improve things that you don’t like about yourself, then do it after you appreciate yourself.” – Adele
“I want women to know that it’s ok. That you can be whatever size you are and be beautiful inside and out.” – Serena Williams
People are body shamed for being too fat, too skinny, too short, too tall, etc. An individual’s worth is not determined by their clothing size or a number on the scale. It is important to embrace your own shape and size. Like actress Kristen Bell has said, “I am not a woman whose self-worth comes from her dress size.”
Live generously, kindly, lovingly, and supportively. Those qualities make up more of the complex person you are than the small detail of you outward appearance. We should take pride in who we are, and live confidently, knowing we have so much to give to the world.
A wonderful article by Mary Pritchard, a professor of Psychology at Boise State University, offers an interesting experiment. The task is simple. Instead of looking in your mirror and pointing out your perceived flaws, turn them into positive statements. Some examples she offers are to instead of thinking of the size of your thighs in a negative way, think of them as strong. Instead of seeing wrinkles as bad, thank them for telling your story.
The most important thing in life is to find what makes you happy, and then follow that path. By thinking positively about ourselves, we can open up a whole new side of happiness. Focus on all the good you can do in the world and what you have to offer. Think of all the amazing things you are, instead of focusing on what you aren’t.
By creating your own personal, authentic path in life, you can help to inspire others to do the same. Everyone has the capacity to be amazing. By not letting other’s negativity affect your life, dreams, and determination, you will be able to live the life you have always imagined living.
