The International Day of Happiness is a new holiday, celebrated for the first time in 2013, that explores what it means to practice, share and experience happiness.
Why does the UN care if you and I are happy? According to the UN General Assembly, “the pursuit of happiness is a fundamental human goal.” Not only that, but there is a worldwide “need for a more inclusive, equitable and balanced approach to economic growth that promotes sustainable development, poverty eradication, happiness and the well-being of all peoples”.
Happiness grows the more we share it. That might mean smiling at your neighbor this Friday – or maybe it’s your chance to volunteer for a local organization, or give to a charity you believe in. It’s up to you!
Fun fact: UN Secretary General, Ban Ki-Moon, picked the Stevie Wonder hit “Signed, Sealed, Delivered, I’m Yours” as his favorite classic happy-making jam. What’s yours?
Turn it UP for happiness, and spread the joy from ear to ear!
